Kal Ho Naa Ho: 20 years of the film that taught some important life lessons

Image
'Kal Ho Naa Ho' is undoubtedly Shah Rukh Khan's one of the finest films. And it's just unbelievable that this movie, which gave us some of the best life lessons, has turned 20 recently. I don't want to give away my age, but I feel pretty old.  From music to dialogues to some iconic scenes, everything about this film is just unforgettable. Today, as I celebrate 20 years of one of my favourite SRK films, here are things I learned from this film: When SRK said 'Jiyo! Khush Raho! Muskurao! Kya Pata Kal Ho Naa Ho!' Shah Rukh Khan plays Aman, who is dying, but he leaves Naina (and us) with an important life-lesson that we should live our life to the fullest and have a lot of fun in every moment because you never know if you'd wake up to see a tomorrow.  When SRK said 'Kaash … kaash main tumhari jagah pe hota … kaash' There is a saying that the 'grass is greener always on the other side'. This movie taught  me how someone else's life is alwa

Should people feel offended by Malla Reddy’s comment on Bollywood at Animal event?

Image
Malla Reddy, Minister of Labour and Employment of Telangana, has passed a comment that has riled up Bollywood lovers. At the ‘Animal’ pre-release event in Hyderabad, Malla Reddy said, “Agle paanch saal mai, Bollywood and Hollywood, pura ruling karega humara Telugu industry…Humara Telugu people ‘smart smart smart’ log hai.”  An X user condemned the comment and wrote, “Filmmakers should avoid calling immature Politicians to Audio or pre-release events... #MallaReddy  comments are not acceptable at all...Trolling between actors is ok...But this North vs South debate is very dangerous and not at all healthy.” Another tweet read, “Hindi audience loves South actors and their movies without any discrimination. But here, the Telugu leader mocked the Bollywood and Hindi audience. We should show the true aukat of these people.”                                                           (Photo: HT) However, should Bollywood lovers be offended by the comment made? While I can’t comment on Hollywood

The Railway Men: A soul-piercing recreation of a tragedy

Image
Over the years, ‘Based on true events’ has become a trope in the world of filmmaking, and very rarely, as an audience, you’re compelled to question and start a conversation around the subject a series or a film is based on. Not all the time you feel moved by such series/films or feel that it is probably one of the best things you’ve watched in a very long time.  But ‘The Railway Men’ justifies to the T when it calls itself a series inspired by true events. Makers also mention how some of the sequences are a work of fiction. But it is such a well-made series that even the fictional parts of it feel like they must’ve happened but may not have been recorded/mentioned.  Based on Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the infamous incident that not only killed several residents of the city but also affected the future generations, ‘The Railway Men’ showed the valour of the railway staff, the unsung heroes, who saved thousands of lives with their instinctive thinking and understanding that insaan hi insaan ke

Animal: Can 3 hours 21 minutes 23 seconds of runtime harm Ranbir Kapoor’s probable career best film?

Image
Ranbir Kapoor-starrer ‘Animal’ is making the right kind of noise ever since the trailer's release. It is being touted as Ranbir’s career best for the kind of intensity, aggression and emotions the actor has displayed in the glimpse of the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial, which is a film based on a father-son relationship. To be honest, intensity-emotions-aggression is not new for someone like Ranbir who has done films such as ‘Tamasha’, ‘Sanju’ and ‘Barfi’, but Ranbir in a bloody-avatar, blazing guns - not for his girlfriend or wife but for his father - is sure something new.  ‘Animal’ looks like the new age ‘Taare Zameen Par’. Imagine Ishaan growing up wanting attention from his father, and in that attempt, he transforms from a naive kid to brutal killer who can do anything for his father at the drop of the hat. Wild imagination, isn’t? Anyway, I absolutely loved the opening sequence of the trailer and how, by the end of the trailer, Anil Kapoor, who plays Ranbir’s father, is scar

Irugapatru - Difficult to ‘hold tight’

Image
We all have grown up listening to how marriages are ‘made in heaven’. The new generation might want to debate that notion as many marriages are ending in divorce or separation either within 2-3 years or in 50-60s. And the new film ‘Irugapatru’ deals with something that lies somewhere between the old and the new reality. The title means 'hold tight' in Tamil. However, be it the script or the BGM, nothing helps us to hold on to the film. But I finished it, and trust me, it was a hard watch.  The film opens with Shraddha Srinath’s character, who is a psychologist, promoting couple counselling, even for someone who is newly married. As a viewer, I wasn’t completely sold on the idea because isn’t it normal for two people, who have never lived together, have differences? And for those who’d ask - What about love marriages? - Well, they too, for most part, live separately. Even for people who have lived with each other before marriage, settling with the family members is also a proces
